As we mark the 60th anniversary of the riot at Gene Compton’s Cafeteria in San Francisco’s Tenderloin, TLM reflects on the ongoing production of The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot play alongside the role of performance and theater in activism and historicization.

The Tenderloin Museum celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riots and Transgender History Month with a look back at The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot play, which has been running continuously at 835 Larkin St. since April of 2025. 

An overlooked inflection point in the LGBTQ Movement, the Compton’s Riot is a tremendous overture in the Tenderloin timeline, one in which TL history’s many themes converge and whose echoes reverberate loudly today. This major anniversary for the 1966 Riot is also a major milestone for the play inspired by it, which (since the play’s inception in 2016) has become the Tenderloin Museum’s most significant, creative, and enduring programmatic offering. Dynamic, immersive theater has proven to be a powerful medium for sharing this radical history, as well as a fitting homage to the youth activist milieu surrounding Compton’s in 1966, The Vanguard, and their theatrical demonstrations (i.e. the Market St. Street Sweeps preceding the late August riot).   TLM is grateful to the creatives, cast, and crew who realized this project as an ongoing production and living monument to this essential story for our times. 

To reflect on the significance of the Compton’s riots after 60 years, TLM invited Susan Stryker, the historian who resurfaced the 1966 transgender-led riots as a critical moment in the burgeoning LGBTQ movement, to lead a round-table discussion amongst The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot’s co-writers and long-time cast & crew.
