Exhibition Run: November 4 - December 29, 2021

“Vision” by Maria Rodriguez and “La Casa Bonita” by Blanca Marenco; AWE participants Blanca Marenco and Tomás Lopez.

Community is a Process is an exhibit featuring artists of the Art With Elders program and hosted by the Tenderloin Museum that explores notions of community building. Based in San Francisco and founded in 1991, Art With Elders (AWE) offers art classes for seniors and exhibits their work on location at a variety of SF Bay Area venues and in the Online Gallery. The AWE program provides older adults with an opportunity for self-expression, social connection, and a presence in the larger community.

The artists exhibiting in Community is a Process are residents of the urban heart of San Francisco, although most originate from other parts of the world. The featured works speak to the continuously evolving process of building community in the midst of change, and many reflect expressions of the immigrant experience. Art With Elders, based in San Francisco serves communities and individuals across the S.F. Bay Area. We partner with several communities in downtown San Francisco neighborhoods, including the Tenderloin.

Visit the show to learn about this diverse group of senior artists, and join the conversation by sharing your impressions of the works and what community means to you on our Community Conversation Board.
