Community is a Process: Art with Elders Opening Reception

  • Tenderloin Museum 398 Eddy Street San Francisco, CA, 94102 (map)

Join us for the opening reception of Community is a Process, an Art with Elders Exhibit. This reception will be held in-person at the Tenderloin Museum and in conjunction with SF First Thursday Art Walk Live!

Community is a Process is an exhibit featuring artists of the Art With Elders program and hosted by the Tenderloin Museum that explores notions of community building. Based in San Francisco and founded in 1991, Art With Elders (AWE) offers art classes for seniors and exhibits their work on location at a variety of SF Bay Area venues and in the Online Gallery. The AWE program provides older adults with an opportunity for self-expression, social connection, and a presence in the larger community.

The artists exhibiting in Community is a Process are residents of the urban heart of San Francisco, although most originate from other parts of the world. The featured works speak to the continuously evolving process of building community in the midst of change, and many reflect expressions of the immigrant experience.

Visit the show to learn about this diverse group of senior artists, and join the conversation by sharing your impressions of the works and what community means to you on our Community Conversation Board.

An Opening Reception will be held on November 4th, part of the SF First Thursday Art Walk Live; during the December 2nd SF First Thursday Art Walk Live, artist Hugh Leeman will lead a Community Empowerment Art Workshop, free and open to all ages, that will focus on the process of creating rather than the product created, and embrace the beauty of experimentation to share our stories through the visual language and rich symbolism of art. Additionally, Art With Elders and the Tenderloin Museum will be selling artworks (and much more!) at the La Cocina Holiday Market on December 11th.
