On the (goldfish-filled) heels of his debut Pavor, out via Dark Entries Records,  Edgar brings his gripping mix of gothy maximalist cumbia, hard-crunched synthpop, and frenetic performance to the streets of the Tenderloin. Edgar plays the October edition of TLM’s monthly program in Dodge Alley alongside DJ sets by INGENUE (aka Maria Silk). 

Veteran musician Luis Gutierrez has spent the past two decades touring in bands, running Lalalandia Studio, and building his practice in Oakland and Guadalajara. But now, for his first solo outing, he has become Edgar, a pop star who knows no limits! His debut record, Pavor, came out this past July out via the Tenderloin based Dark Entries Records, and the label describes the release as a mix of sleazy disco, warped synthpop, and gothic cumbia.

INGENUE (aka Maria Silk) is a San Francisco-based DJ. Her musical selections interweave new releases with tunes from gay bars and dance floors of yore, bringing an archival sensibility to the club. A drag queen and DJ active in the Bay Area for over a decade, she co-hosts the ongoing parties Angels and Juicy Fruit.

Both artists are fixtures at the TL’s beloved Aunt Charlie’s Lounge, where Maria Silk is the co-host of the monthly “Aunt Charlie’s Angels” night at which Edgar is an occasional performer. TLM is honored to have them out of doors and in the street for a free show for the Tenderloin community! 

Free, outdoor, music-centric happenings at a once notorious Tenderloin alley began in 2022 through a collaboration between TLM, the Tenderloin Community Benefit District, and longtime residents of the alley. These events were some of the first “Sounds of the Tenderloin” programs, a series of events “animating the TL’s under-sung cultural history through live music” that began with a grant from Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, continued with more support from the State of CA’s Museum Grant Program, and now exists as a monthly block party at Dodge Place. Since those initial shows, the alley has benefited from substantial community investment, including a Community Challenge Grant project that brought two stunning murals to the alley and an ongoing grant through the TLCBD to bring monthly music to the Alley along with free food/drink vouchers to spend at adjacent businesses. TLM is thrilled to return to programming Dodge Alley and to grow the vibrancy of this amazing community space and truly urban venue.
